Be Still

Mt. Arjuno, seen from close by our home

I don't know about you, but I have been seeing definite signs of Christmas lately. Our youngest child has been practicing for her school Christmas play, we have put up some Christmas decorations in our house, I hear Christmas music when I enter certain stores,... It definitely feels like Christmas is near. And yet, so different. The world seems so different than the world of last Christmas. The masks, the restrictions, the fear, the disturbing news reports, etc. I admit I have to be careful these days, that I don't watch any news right before going to bed. If I do, and it happens to be something shocking, scary, or controversial, then I might not get to sleep for some time, because of the many thoughts swirling around and around in my head. At those times, the truth of Psalm 4:8 is a far cry from reality. There David says, "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety."

But the other day as I was driving near my home, this view of Mt. Arjuno took my breath away. The photo (above) that I took, does not do justice to the beautiful view that I saw. I stopped my car to stare at it for a few moments. The words of Psalm 46:10 came to my mind. "He says, 'Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.'" In Psalm 8, David basically says that God's creation speaks out about how great and glorious is our God. Indeed, in the midst of these chaotic times that we are living in, that beautiful mountain spoke out loud and clear to me. "Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!" (Ps.8:1 / 9) Try to take a few moments today to just be still and listen. You might be surprised at what you hear!

The Truth About Me

It dawned on me one day recently, that my sense of worth was tied up with a ton of "must do's" and "must not do's...
